Placer Creek river rock is a mix of vitrified quartzite and granite cobbles hand -picked under forest canopy in an abandoned gold mining site. Water brought down from high
mountain sources was used to wash and extract gold from sediment. This form of "placer" mining involved intensive hand labor. Stones were stacked in walls a few feet apart, allowing water to course
between. Today, the recovering site is heavily forested. Acres of leaning walls stand as lichened monuments to the industry and tenacity of forgotten generations.
Karl built the fireplace pictured above, left, in a small cabin in southwestern Montana during the winter of 2002-'03. Stone is typical 4"to 6" in thickness, with a
delightfully lively coloration of solid golds, rose and white quartz marbling, enhanced over the years by lichens, moss and algal highlighting. This material exudes grace and integrity, lending immediate
historical authenticity to the newest of projects.
